Secret Recipe Shaftsbury: New Menu~

Don't we look like sisters? We probably share a grandma somewhere back up the line.

It's always fun going out with Ning. I did a review with her last on Penang House and if you recall, it's now my turn to pay for lunch. Today we decided to go to Shaftsbury's in Cyberjaya to check out the restaurants there. Shaftsbury's Square is the new row of shops right up the street from MSC.

Ask for the brownie to be heated. And ask for WALNUT Brownie.
Simply awesome. A!

Ningy--a.k.a Dr Guo to people under 25 and living on MMU campus---is from China and all we talked about that day was the MH370 crash. It was quite therapeutic because you know how women need to get 21,000 words off her chest to feel good again? (this theory remains to be proven though). Well, I think I managed to finish my word quota that day with Ningy, because I fiercely stared at my Master's student who dropped by my office unexpectedly that afternoon until he scurried off in fright. Sorry.

Anyway, we finally ended up at Secret Recipe and you know I've done reviews of Secret Recipe before. It isn't that Secret Recipe is my favourite favourite place at Cyberjaya, no no, that would be Tokio still, but the brownies and ice-cream have this magnetic pull I can't resist especially in light of current incidents: the missing MAS flight, the haze, the draught and the denggi outbreaks, na'uzubillah. Money can't buy you a feel-better pill (actually it can) but chocolate cake and ice-cream is safer and halal.

Ningy ordered beef steak (RM22.50) and I had the fish and chips because it was a new hotter version of Fish and Chips, check it out; Spicy Fish and Chips (RM18.50). I loved it and Ningy's black pepper sauce which flooded her beef was good too, although she said the beef was a bit tough. I noticed something else too-- Secret Recipe had a whole new menu book with...*drumroll* PIZZA! I tried ordering and they said the store is still new so no pizza on serve-- bummer! If I was 22 I would have stomped off to Pizza Hut which is just next door. Now that I am a wiser, I just gave an annoyed smile.

Close up of heaven.
Pizza is now on the menu!!
Spicy fish and chips! Fresh and crunchy. B++!
Fresh and tough and good sauce! B+!

Apart from the extra-terrestrial prices (especially cake) plus tax charges that make you feel like voting for the opposition party, I still think Secret Recipe is a nice place to lepak-lepak and hang out with friends and family. The new branch in Shaftsbury's is still new enough to have fluffy sofa's and there's a new selection of food, cakes and drinks since last time I visited them--which was back in December 2013 with a RM254 ringgit bill that had left me quite traumatized. Until this day.

Penang House @ Street Mall Cyberjaya: good good cheap cheap

Curry Mee and Beef Noodle Soup. A!

As I sit in my office waiting for my academic advisees to show up, I sit staring at these pictures -- trying to remember how good it tasted. These were from the last 3 weeks, when I went out with Ningy for lunch at the Street Mall, and I was about 10 lbs lighter. Since then I have put on more muscle from various activities. Weddings mostly.

Cyberjaya's very own TOKIO

I should have blogged about this place ages ago, but the AES cameras planted by the roadside on my way back from work means I reach home 10 minutes later than usual; that's 50 minutes a week of valuable blog time down the drain.

Ning introduced me to this place because she thought it awesome. And I brought Nadia few weeks later because I concur! Here are the top 10 reasons why Tokio is the number 2 eatery in Cyberjaya, surpassed only by Saba' out of my loyalty to lamb kabsah not served by Tokio.

And in true Letterman style, begin drumroll...

Madam Kwan's ~ Authentic Fusioned Food :P

Ningy one day before flying back to China.
Circa 2012.

So this was a Ningy and Shima lunch session. We haven't had one of those in so long we were almost polite to each other. In the beginning. Before she bombarded me with questions from the scandalous picture of a few adorable kids I posted on FB. On Ningy's end, she is no longer with her old yoga place, and tomorrow she had a flight to catch to Beijing. It was a good time to get together and do a food review before the next accumulation of overwhelmingly exciting news.

Madam Kwan had recently opened up a new branch in Alamanda. In retrospect, I have had a few invites to Madam's a few times in the past so I have always had this assumption that the place must be really good. I don't quite get the tags on the place though:

Cafe. Okay. Cuisine. Okay. Nasi Lemak. Huh?

Kwanies must not have yet met my post-doc supervisor who would have gone crazy beserk at the sudden inconsistency in noun usage. Definite re-write and six months worth of corrections right there.

Bojori fried rice. That there is an egg. FYI.
The thing about Ningy is that she's really good at picking which dishes to order, which is why I am always dragging her along when we visit a new place. The bojori fried rice she ordered was really delicious. My mushroom chicken rice with soup and grated ginger was okay too, although I suspect the dish has more MSG in it than all the other ingredients combined.
The cendol and ABC was up to standard for the higher-than-average price we paid for it. But the deco at the place was really cosy and more than made up for it.
For now, I'd say Madam Kwan is really good and very comfortable. A fusion of Malay-Chinese specialties that gives authenticity a whole new meaning, priced just right for the average professional who's taking her time applying for that promotion because she is still editing an authentic paper one of her authentic students sent her.

Chicken mushroom rice. B!

Go to Kwanies and order the Bojori. Thanks Ningy.

Nyonya Colors (awesome food that's moderately priced--in KL)

We celebrated the year of the Dragon in Mid Valley with Mark Wahlberg and half of the KL population. And, for those of you who are movie-goers, Contraband, is an extremely violent movie. I was practically on the edge of my seat the entire two hours (wishing for it to be over). Trust the 18 rating given to the movie and leave your kids at home. Children should stick to Nat Geo and the History Channel.

Asam Laksa. YES. YES. Go for it.
Glutinous rice (pulut) with chicken curry.
YES. Ning says.

Since the movie knocked me cold somewhat, I let Ning pick the restaurant for lunch. Besides, it's not like I stuck her picture on that left wall for nothing--she does have a knack at choosing very good food. And once again, I must admit, I was impressed. The place we had lunch at was awesome, and to be honest, I wasn't even that hungry. The asam laksa was excellent. And for RM9.80 I thought it was worth every single penny: big pieces of succulent fish, thinly sliced pineapple (I am a self-proclaimed Pineapple Princess), a drizzle of otak udang and and just the right amount of mint leaves. Ning had the pulut with chicken curry. She said it was marvelous. Take her word for it. She is a loyal citizen of that mall.

So there you go. Nyonya Colors. My first ever favourite restaurant in Mid Valley. Before that, Tony Roma's had potential, but that place is too expensive for it's own good. Now until the next time Ning drags me to Mid Valley, I am going back to Alamanda.

Black Canyon (never judge a restaurant by its name~~)

Ning's frothy coffee. YES. YES

When I think Black Canyon, I think high, steep cliff and people plunging to their deaths. How about you? Is that why you've been avoiding that place all this time..? Huh? Huh?

Now the neurons in my brain have rewired to take on a different path. All I can think about when Black Canyon comes to mind, is the ultimate selection of coffee that puts Starbucks to shame, combined with --and here's the surprising part--Siamese cuisine. The reason it took a while for me to blog this one down is because I can't come up with enough English words to describe the dining experience without doing a cut and paste from the overwhelming Sup Ketin review. But I'm telling ya..the place was beyond our wildest expectations. Not that it was that wild. OK, just a little bit wild.

Spicy seafood salad with fresh lemongrass. YES YES YES

This was a Shima & Ningy Saturday session. After gawking over Tom Cruise like a couple of teenagers for two hours in Ghost Protocol, it was time for lunch and a spot of karaoke. Although, now that I am sitting comfortably in my reclining chair as I type this in, I think I am getting sick of karaoke. I'm going pro.

Stir-fried prawn, chicken and cili with jasmine rice. YES
Here's that cili prawn and chicken again. You can get it on its own. YES.
My coffee in a glass boot. YES

I am just going to cut through the chase here. The coffee and desert selection --was more than words can say.  It had it's own menu book for it. Credits to Ning, she did a good job at choosing the stuff we ate that day. Her choice of coffee came with tea (would you believe it?) and these adorable little fish biscuits. And it was only RM6.50.  The stir-fried cilli of prawn & chicken, and the spicy seafood salad with lemongrass were both divine. The rice was jasmine, how cute (and delicious) is that? I never though Siam food could be so awesome. I had thought their greatest food creation was just Tom-Yam. And kerabu mangga. Apparently not.

You may now start looking at the pictures and start dribbling. The manager came by to see if we were OK. I promised her a good review of the restaurant. Promise delivered. Go people!

Saba' --again (stick to the lamb kabsah people)

Rice pudding. YES.

In between the last Saba' post and this one, bear in mind that I've dropped by this place several times already, usually for very large orders for the Family and especially when we have visitors at the house. Even the manager now knows me personally and throws me free stuff, and the friendly cashier has given up on my phone number. I must be one of Saba's biggest fan if not the number 1 fan. So embarrassing.

The review this time around is for high tea. Please note, my friend, that high tea is no regular tea. Regular tea is teh tarik and a limp piece of pisang goreng right? like what they throw at you in boarding school and say: be grateful for there are others worst off --in that condescending tone. Well, high tea is where you submerge your words in a thick British accent and discuss the weather accompanied by a substantial meal that includes tea. No kidding.

Mango juice. This is NOT a drink.
This is a MEAL.
We decided to try out something other than lamb kabsah. This was high tea after all, not lunch. Ning had yoga class in like an hour and she cannot possibly do those fantastic postures if she's full of lamb kabsah. We ended up closely scrutinizing the menu for everything other than lamb kabsah which took a lot of effort. Old habits are hard to break and new territory is always scary. But we managed it. And the waiter was ever so patient while Ning screamed hurry up and order woman!

Finally, I ordered the rice pudding, lamb soup, chicken schwerma and mango juice. Ning decisively ordered muttabal, lamb kebab and her adani tea.

The rice pudding was different. It had lemon peels in it which gave me squishes of delight in between random spoonfuls (I love lemon). The chicken schwerma was too dry and too tough. The lamb soup tasted like lamb boiled in salt water but I had a big portion of lamb so it was not that bad. And the mango juice was like mango sludge. It was so thick I nearly choked on it.  I had  to order water and mix my own drink at the table. So the small glass in the picture is the original mango sludge. And the big plastic cup contains my modified version.

Chicken Schwerma. NO. and lamb soup. YES.
All in all, it was a relaxing high tea, although I'd rather pass by Tutti-Fruitti next time and work on  preventing colon cancer. Dropped Ning off at the taxi-stand to burn off her calories at yoga class and went back to my exciting office for work, work and more work. How exciting can life be? I need to find me another photography competition and work on my under-developed neglected creative side. Know any? share share!

Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (nothing special...~)

How pathetic can I be. I make a trip to KLCC like once every blue moon and the one time I do go, I go to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Sorry guys. It wasn't totally a meal trip. It was actually a trip to attend the musical broadway Stomp, and wasn't really feeling that hungry right after, probably because I was slowly munching on a chocolate mint muffin throughout the show.

Btw, Stomp was amazing. It was a musical show of sounds generated from regular everyday items like your broom, trashcan, cigarette lighter and paint cans. The coordination and synchronization among the performers just blew me away. And though they uttered less than 10 words altogether, the audience was tickled pink at the drama (the fat guy kept being left out) and I laughed more than when watching the stupid raja lawak show. Will definitely take armand along next year should I get promoted (cause the tickets ain't cheap). Although at this moment in time, that prospect seems highly unlikely (based on the rate at which I am spitting out journals).

Stomp star. The fat guy.  He doesn't look too bad after he took
off  the tummy padding. Autograph session.
My latte and biscotti. The biscotti was nice.

Okay. Coffee bean. Was ok. The hunk of a Japanese guy sitting at the table next to mine presented me with a chocolate muffin in an exquisite green Tiffany's cardboard box complete with ribbons because he thought I was alone and probably felt extremely sympathetic (Ning's order took so long I was practically deserted). And then he told me he had diabetes which made me kind of glad when Ning finally did arrive with her coffee. Don't get me wrong. He got the muffin for free when he bought a pair of 24-carrot gold ear-rings for his girlfriend. Or was it his mom? Communication breakdown. So not happening.

Ning's coffee and cheesecake.
Back to Coffee Bean. Again. It was ok. Next time I go to KLCC though, I will definitely try somewhere else to kick back for leisure talk. Lately, I feel like coffee is overpriced, over-rated, too expensive, too bitter and sometimes even too sweet. And while we're on that topic, avoid the Ying-Yong pearl milk tea at Little Taiwan in Alamanda. It is coffee and tea combined and tastes so ridiculous I almost cried over the 6.90RM I spent on it.

Manhattan Fish Market (for that fishy feeling...)

Nings. Baked fish with chips.
SUPERB
I am at my hairdressers on a Friday night..can you believe it? I cannot find the time to go during office hours. So, as the pretty hairdresser blows my wild hair, I am busily typing this in on my smartphone; the latest lunch escapade we had today. Manhattan Fish Market at Alamanda Putrajaya.

I remember missing breakfast this morning because of a 9 am meeting. So by the time we went off for lunch, I was a hungarian on a roll with all problems/chores/responsibilities on hold and phone on vibrate.

I ordered the starter suggested by the waitress: fried mushroom that came with salad. And fish and chips...because i missed the UK so much. *sob*. Ning, my health guru, ordered baked fish with chips. She doesn't eat anything thats battered and fried. That's where we differ. Except for chips. That's where we're similar. And I am talking real chips here. Not anything like those skinny french fries they serve at Mc'Donalds that has twice the amount of oil drenched in them.

Fried mushrooms with salad. Y E S
Ning says I sometimes have a fit of verbal diarrhea (in her defense, she didn't grow up with 5 siblings and 2 toilets), so this time around I am going to beat around the bush and employ more elegance in my choice of words- and lets see if that'll increase my fan base (I think not)

Lets just say: Manhattan did not disappoint. Everything was not bad, not spoiled and definitely not been in the freezer long before you ordered it. OMG, now I sound pessimistic. What I really wanted to say is, and I say this with much gusto and enthusiasm: Manhattan fish market is the best western seafood place to date. Their Dory (that fish you get everywhere in Malaysia), can even pass for Cod, its that fresh. And if seafood turns you cold because your doctor says go easy on the cholesterol, skip the battered-fried fish and go for baked or grilled. They are equally as good and healthy. Just the right blend of herbs and olive oil. I had a stab at Ning's fish and it was heavenly. (I would have stabbed all of it but there was a nerdy bloke sitting on the next table and I had to keep appearances).

Manhattan rocks. And though its from America, the fish and chips are just as good as the ones from Britain,  albeit it's missing the vinegar. And if you're really in tune with your dining partner (same taste palate and all), go for the double platters. They (freaking) rock. True and tested.

Johnny's (the dude does steamboats~~)

Stuff that's going into the steamboat.
I am writing this entry from the crime scene itself i.e., from the restaurant I am reviewing--as Ning is slurping on the remainder of our steamboat soupie--which she can afford to since she spends at least few hours at the gym...and me? I spend like 20 mins. So, its better for me to stop eating before I actually lose my vivacious coca-cola bottle figure (in-my-dreams).

The place we're eating? Johnny's..that restaurant right at the very end of the foodcourt in Alamanda. Many a time have we trudged through the foodcourt with the sole intention of eating at Johnny's and every single time, we get detered by the delicious array of food on display along the way. Today though, we were determined: having found that the Twilight movie tickets were totally sold out and there was no way we'd be meeting with Edward the vampire tonight, Johnny's will have to do.

To put it mildly, I was mildly surprised. Johnny's is a Chinese steamboat restaurant with prices that were actually quite agreeable. The steamboat for 2 was a mere RM29..not bad eh, and since we're paying to cook the stuff ourselves, the wait for raw meat and veggies to arrive at the table was literally less than 3 mins~~
Seawood noodles with chicken. Like nothing I
have ever tasted before. And I mean that in a good way.

Because I was ravenous I also ordered the seaweed noodles with chicken. That was an additional RM8.90 but it came with Thai tea, ice-cream and a little bowl of tom-yam soup. The tom-yam made me arrive to a new conclusion though...contrary to what Ning had said about this being a Chinese restaurant, I don't think it is, I think its' actually Thai. And while we are on that topic, avoid the Thai restaurant at the bus terminal in cyber, because the last time me and Nadia ate there, there were cicak eggs in the tom-yam soupie.

So Johnny's? It was okay. It did not blow me away but the food was certainly a good variety and the price was not bad at all and in fact cheaper than the foodcourt itself (softdrinks and ice-cream only ~RM2. What?!). Plus there's this steaming couldron of hot soup right in front of you so if you experience one of those akward silences with your dinner companion, you can pretend to get busy and do the cooking instead of toying with your phone and holding a public conversation on facebook. Or if you're like Ning, you can unload your shopping at the table, share steamboat cooking tips and cook at the same time in the true meaning of the word multitasking.

Ning practising to be a good housewife...

This place is great for families. Cook in front of your kids and hubbies why dontcha, and show 'em how its really done without even breaking a sweat. And you don't even have to clean up after. Nice.

Saba' (lamb is legen --wait for it-- dary..!)

Food that can break your diet vow anytime.
Last night, Ning and I, amidst tons of work still yet to be done, went out for a quick dinner at Saba'. Saba' is way up there in a class of its own. Saba' is the epitome of good wholesome food. It fulfills all three criterias for dining out: (i) substantial amount of really (ii) delicious food, at a (iii) reasonable price. Top that up with really fast service and you'll find that it's really hard to get a table at Saba'--most times.

Usually, (in fact, everytime we eat there) we'd order the lamb Kabsah. This time however, we were feeling adventurous and gambled on the lamb Hanith. It did taste just as good, except that there were more boney ribs than meat with the lamb Hanith. We practically fought each other over the ribs, in a feminine civil manner that did not call for attention. Thank goodness for education and excellent up-bringing.

Mutabbal and salad in yogurt...in the background.
Mutabbal is crushed eggplant topped with olive oil. It tastes and looks a bit like humus, but has a slightly different texture and tasted less salty. It actually does not taste that good to me, but it used to be comfort food while I slaved away on my PhD. So my palate says urghh~~ but my brain says awesome~~~.. weird huh..and of course my brain wins, since its so rational.
Adani tea. Thats mint tea to you and me.

Ning ordered the mint adani tea as well. She spoiled it with sweetened condensed milk. The Arabs would have groaned in despair. Ning.

Great place for lunch and dinner anytime with friends and family. Well-lit up. Upright chairs. People laughing till they choke, left and right. Loud TV. You get the idea.

Cream and Fudge Factory (extreme sugar rush)

Have you ever heard the saying, too much of a good thing..can actually do you harm? Well, much as I want to say all the sweetest things about the Cream and Fudge Factory, and much as I admire the professional-looking chef mixing the ice-cream up on his ice-board like cement, I must say, the cream fudge factory was... too sweet.

With diabetes running genetically in almost every household in Malaysia, I personally found the ice-cream that was already too sweet to begin with, and then topped some more with cookies and pieces of chocolate almost unbearable. And this is me who has an uncontrollable penchant for sweetness. Not exaggerating it but I am literally all sugar. They took my gallbladder out ages ago. They, as in the X-files people who did Charlie the Unicorn.

Kenny Rogers (chickens getting smaller?)

I've just finished cooking beef rendang for the eid celebration tomorrow, and now, before we actually leave town for my grandma's, I want to put in an entry for my food excursion last night for my handful of loyal blog readers, just in case you miss me while I'm gone. Probably n o t?

Last night was Kenny Rogers. I know what you're thinking. Another western food chain? boring. But bare with me please. Before I actually go into local restaurants, let me get my act together because I don't want to put them out of business.

Caramel machiato and Americano

Le chick!!

So we arrived at around 7:30 pm, and dilly dallied around the mall looking at -- what all normal late 20's girls look at -- shoes, before we decided to get some meat into us.

At 8pm, we finally plodded on to Kenny Rogers, settled on the PVC chairs and made ourselves comfy, flipped open the menu, and, after a mild discussion on calories, decided on the quarter chicken, three sides and a muffin. Let me be crystal clear here: two quarter chicken meals. No ones sharing.

The music was good. Some mainstream Indonesian band that made it big in Malaysia. Thank goodness they were no longer spinning and re-spinning Kenny Roger's ancient tracks. Much as I am into country music, Kenny is too old and too melancholy. Which reminds me of that really old track my guitar guru told me to practice. That really melancholic song Sembilu (Splinter, I think) by Ella. I keep messing up the first verse and singing: ...tak terlintas ingatanku terhadapmu (read: you never once crossed my mind) ...and strumming so fast that its become more like a cheerful puppy-love song than a heartbroken one. Oh well.

The food, lets just say it was good. So good Ning was in extraordinary good spirits the remainder of the night. But that might have been the Americano coffee she ordered because I'm beginning to see a trend. The chicken was gorgeous. And the muffins were sinful (for me at least, being in a lose-weight competition and all).

All in all a risk-free dining experience, with a substantial amount of food on an enormous plate at a reasonable price. Bottom-line: an excellent place for taking an awesome friend out on her birthday. For the not so awesome friends, there's always McD.

KFC Cyber (parking a challenge)

This should come as no surprise, KFC is everywhere in Malaysia, so I might as well put it in as I had lunch there with Ning today. The worst thing about KFC in Cyberjaya is the parking. If you go, go on foot. Cause you'd be going round the block a few times to find a parking spot, and will probably end up parking illegally at some weird angle near the Petronas petrol station, just like I did today.

Well, we all know what KFC tastes like, so I won't elaborate. Crunchy, crispy, oily, and cholesterol-ful. Top it with some slaw and mash and a sugar-loaded soft drink. Yummy. KFC actually evolved from the full blown Kentucky Fried Chicken logo to simply KFC just so that consumers would forget what the F stood for. As if. We know fried chicken when we see one, even if the entire cooperation is renamed Kentucky Boiled Chicken.

Not that they'd have to. We're crazy about fried banana's too so chicken's no prob.

The new tom-yam flavoured hot and spicy ain't all that good. And I am guessing this is only available in Thailand and Malaysia. Colonel Saunders would go bonkers if he was still alive. The secret is in the 11 herbs and spices. Not 11 herbs and spices and calamondin leaves.

And what happened to the egg-tarts? They couldn't wait for the chickens to lay eggs no more? Business must be good albeit park at will. So next stop at KFC cyber? Let me check my calendar -- erm never. Not until I get a parking space. And a free egg-tart.

Ning wants two mash and I wanted two slaws.
So it worked out pretty well for both of us.
