Jaya Grocer :: Amazing Cafeteria Food :: Armand's Birthday

Birthday boy with Auntie and bro

An overdue post is coming your way right now. On a supermarket that has a most rocking restaurant--Jaya Grocers--located inside Gateway Bangi. It is the first building you see on your right as you slowly smartTag your way through Tol Bangi (because the car in front had low batteries or no credit, as always).

First visit to Jaya Grocers cafe. Circa early 2014.

I had noticed the sizzling roast lamb and beef staring at me a while back, and one sunny afternoon after the plane ride from Langkawi, we came here for a late lunch. And it was awesome. So for Armand's 13th birthday (yep, my son is now 13 years old and even taller than his pretty mama), I made arrangements with Chef Zul --that's the head chef at Jaya's Grocer--for dinner with my party of 7. Armand's own request. In other words, Secret Recipe just lost one of its long-lasting customers this birthday. Must be the frightful 16% tax they charge there that always leaves you gaping in confused wonder at the cashier.

The cafeteria at Jaya's is just like a smaller version of my old university cafeteria or IKEA's cafeteria, if you like. All the food is on display under a glass hood not facing your way and when ordering, you pinpoint the dish you want and they'll slap it on the tray for ya. After that first day of slapping though, they were always out of lamb when we came along (usually around 9pm for our weekly groceries). So of course, I had to make a contingency plan for the upcoming birthday celebration to avoid disappointment. And Chef Zul was kind enough to make a reservation of lamb for me without me putting down a single cent. Thank You Allah for the fact that we are still a trustful and trustworthy nation. Though I cannot say the same for my maid.

A!!
roast lamb with mash and veggies.
And gravy!

roast chicken with mash and grilled veggies.
Awesome!
Armand's birthday cake. Creme brulee..
Very nice!

You get 150 gms of beef/lamb and 2 whopping side dishes per plate. And each plateful costs around RM20+. May I just say, the meat was tender and juicy and absolutely unsuitable for people with hypertension. In which case there is always chicken, pie or pasta alternatives. But we each went for a plateful of red meat and sides instead, with an enormous helping of the most grooviest of gravies. My favourite side dishes: macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables. Just give it a try; your tongue is in tongue-heaven the few seconds before you swallow. And repeat.

I recommend you share one gigantic dish for two because there is a lot to go around and membazir itu sahabat syaitan. Unless everyone in your family are well-built and strong like mine and have to do laundry every day, which requires lots and lots of energy.

So try it out for dinner tonight, especially if you're slightly lethargic (i.e., tired lately) and need a good dollop of iron. And then afterwards you can release more stress by looking at all the imported chocolates and biscuits on the supermarket shelves just next to your table.

For my 13 year old-- may you grow up wise and strong like your mother. And good-natured like your father. In his younger days.

Mines Wellness Hotel :: for business and pleasure

A room with a view~

Don't think we are a super lovey dovey romantic couple because we are not. Although I know my husband is completely crazy about me, there are many different versions of crazy. I can imagine now his exasperated look at me as he addresses another one of my idealistic issues--as he calls it. Bismillahitawakkal tu ala'Allah.

Thus is the introduction to the next romantic getaway post. This time we are staying and reviewing the Mines Wellness Hotel. As organizer to a workshop for the faculty, Ms Saraswathy, the manager, has kindly and most wonderfully obliged me and partner a complimentary room and dinner, and I thought the place was awesome and deserves an awesome review.

We arrived around 8 pm and were put in Room 525 which has a king-size bed and an amazing view of the lake. True, there was a ferry cruising on it playing loud ghastly music, but even that didn't affect my mood. Just sitting on the porch and staring at the lights as it bounced off the lake gave me the most serene feeling of calmness. It must be the water. Hubs was smiling too as he ipadded and youtubed. There was a No Smoking RM200 fine sign if you smoked in the room or even if we remotely suspected you smoked in the room which I found quite amusing. Nama pun Wellness Hotel kan. But hubs was not deterred. He gave new meaning to the saying where there's a will there's a way.

your favourite food blogger
And her SO

We went down for dinner at 9 pm and if it weren't for the family at the next table and the waiters, we would be the only ones there. Dinner was satisfying, although I felt everything needed a dash of salt. But then I remembered we are taking about Wellness here and salt should be restricted for better health. Mushroom soup? check! Chicken salad? check check! Ceaser salad? Big check! Grilled fish? Super check! and hubs meal: mixed red meat platter. Check!! Diet down the drain? Very big CHECK!

Our freshly blended juices. On the house~

Chicken salad. A very small serving. But just enough!

Ceasar salad. Less salt for better health.

Hubs unhealthy meat platter. To compensate for the healthy salads
we had earlier. Ngehh~~

Bottom-line, I loved the place and so did hubs. We had a very very very pleasant evening there and slept like logs with the curtains open facing a most serene view. The fact that the stay was free and food salt-free made the stay even more awesome. However, I wouldn't mind paying if each stay was as comfortable and refreshing as this one. On a side note, the workshop that kicked off the next day was great too and some of my friends and colleagues complimented on the place and food.

Thank you Ms Saraswathy for having us on very short notice. Looking forward to many more workshops and stays at Mines Wellness in the near future.

Al-Qasar: New BEST Arab Place in Cyberjaya.

FOE's favourite lecturers. Cause we're so kind and generous. And
don't scribble the students reports that much before it flies out the window.
And another one. Kinder one.

Thanks people, for stopping by and looking through my posts for the next best place to take the family. I find writing very therapeutic, and I am glad I could help, even if you just skim through the headlines. I used to write about my cat Koko, and she had a big fan-club going, but she ran out on me when she found out I was writing behind her back. I would love to write about Islam, but I am not learned and would probably implicate myself. I would love to write about my research but three of my papers got rejected in the past and the scars are just drying up. And if I wrote about my life experience, I would probably end up in court or someone's hit list. So lets talk about food instead~~

This next restaurant just baffles me, in the highest sense of the word. I am in turmoil and I am confused. But as an outrageously feminine woman, I need to unravel my confused mind via some complex nouns and FFT transforms in order to see a clearer picture of what the confusion is all about.

Steeping into Al-Qasar is like stepping into an Arab soap opera setting. The place itself is quite spectacular. A visit would propel you into an Arab palace complete with symmetrical arches and water fountain. If a flying carpet suddenly flung me in the air or a squad of belly dancers broke into song, I wouldn't blink an eyeball nor will BP be affected. Hanging from the center of the ceiling is a chandelier that looks ancient middle-eastern-Turkish. The chairs are wide and hard with cushions to lean on. Deco-wise, Al-Qasar makes other restaurants in Cyberjaya look like car wash centres.

Foodwise though -- pretty amazing. The makhzoon lamb was crazy delicious. The humus beiruti made us lick our fingers. My kids fought over the left-overs I brought home of the chicken-baked-in-bread dish -- I can't recall the sophisticated name. Miza was so impressed she vows never to set foot in Saba' again. I wouldn't be so cruel. Saba' has been good to me. But Saba' needs to step up a little now.

The chicken baked in bread dish.
BEFORE
AFTER.

Then what.is.the.problem?

It's the service. It sucked big time. But because the food literally tornado-ed us away, I gave it a second, third and fourth chance before I even wanted to write this review. I can honestly say on an average of 4 visits we were lucky with service 1 time. Thats a 25% probability of achieving a passing satisfaction rate at Al-Qasar. And I did everything on the mental checklist to grab the waiters attention: take out camera, wave hand, smile, act like I'm in a hurry and finally, pull bengang face. Food arrived at a rate of 1 dish per half hour, and drink  (read: just warm water) arrived before we were about to leave. At the second visit, food did not arrive at all, it disappeared like the MH370 and they told us to come back later. I wanted to flood them with my limited repertoire of French words, but I couldn't risk being banned from the place.

Chicken makhzoon
Lamb makhzoon. The meats came in the foil and was so tender.

Yesterday, when I told my husband the girl at the kitchen cabinet store pulled a sulky face at me, he said we'll do our cabinets elsewhere (that was before the ridiculous quotations arrived in email). But I would say Al-Qasar is an exception---the waiters can pull all the sulky face in the world, the cashier can reject your stained ten ringgit note and wave it in your face, and the manager can tell you to leave because your baby is pooping and howling, but you'd still come crawling back for more. Awesome food Al-Qasar. Please just be gentle with us. We Malays don't do kasar-kasar. We are peace-loving people you know.

The humus that captured my heart.
Humus beiruti. It runs out of stock frequently too.

Swez Brasserie Eastin Hotel PJ: For a Lovely Surprise Anniversary Dinner

Desert. Truffles and raspberries. So delicious.

This post is dedicated to my significant other, and the wonderful staff at Eastin Hotel with whom I promised an awesome review. Also for all those wonderful wives out there who are thinking on surprising their equally wonderful husbands, here's an idea for you that works. Insya'Allah.

My husband did not see this one coming because it was so intricately planned, if I may say so myself. I asked him to accompany me to Eastin Hotel for a meeting with a virtual friend, and he took the bait and obliged.

I would like to thank the Eastin staff for the crazy rose arrangement on the bed. That was really thoughtful (and funny) I thought, but priceless indeed. I was just as surprised as my husband. He was still looking about the room for the friend we were supposed to meet. He chewed a rose petal and said: these are real~~ I nearly suffocated him with a pillow.

Thanks to the staff at Eastin for the very romantic rose petal arrangement.
If it was up to me, I would have just strewn everything on the bed.

We went downstairs for dinner at 8:30 pm, and I whatsapped the restaurant in advance telling them of our impending arrival. Hubs was already raring on buying me dinner and he had been surfing on the internet for nice restaurants in the PJ area. When we reached the lobby, Mr Ah Kit (the coffeehouse manager on duty that night), managed to persuade him to a table to check out the menu. But when we got to the table, it was already set and dinner was served. My husband's expression was priceless. Certainly worth more than dinner. If I could replay life, I would have that one expression on repeat 1. Especially when we have our squabbles.

The food was delicious. I had ordered the dishes in advance back in the comfort of my cold little office a week ago: rack of lamb and brownies for desert for hubs, and salmon and apple pie for me. But I must say again: it was superb and it was perfect. I loved the table arrangement and the garnishing on the food, especially desert. I did mention to the staff this was a surprise anniversary dinner for my husband, but the arrangement they made exceeded my expectations in every way. And for that I owe them a surprise dinner. Which reminds me of the infinite filter I am teaching in class.

Salmon. A!
Rack of lamb, medium well. Superb!
Apple pie with ice-cream.

Brownies with ice-cream. A++

Thanks to Mr Subra, Mr Ah Kit, and Mr Henry for the wonderful arrangments to make this occasion a special one for us, also to Ms Jessylina from reservations for the flower arrangement, and to Ms Iris from customer services for lending me her personal phone charger because I didn't pack one (if you need their numbers let me know). And finally big thanks for my husband for coming along. And for pampering me and spoiling me all this while. And for being very patient with me. And for paying for the anniversary dinner I set up ----behind my back.

Congratulations to everyone who is celebrating another anniversary this year too (especially my good friend and colleague Zu who shares the same anniversary date with us, except she's on her tenth one!). Life is certainly a very tough journey, but the love and support of a good spouse makes it endurable and worthwhile. Alhamdulillah.

So be a good one! :)

Our first anniversary. Praying for many more to come. Ameen.

VEENA: Langkawi's MUST-STOP Thai Seafood Restaurant. Trust me.

Please excuse me for the disappearing act. The week before I was away on a trip celebrating our anniversary and my birthday in Langkawi. Thank you to my husband for the most elaborate anniversary/birthday present ever. May Allah bless you and our marriage.

This was dinner on the second night we were there. We were cruising by the Kuah district, after an entire morning in the sea and hubs had come up with a temperature. The weird thing about Langkawi is, all tourist spots and clinics even--close at 6pm--way way to early even for sub-urban girl me. It wasn't until 8 pm did we finally managed to find one open clinic, run by a kindly elderly doctor who looked like he was ready to retire. He jabbed hubs one time in the butt with a lethal anti-virus and sent us on our way.

From the outside, the restaurant did not look appealing at all. Birthday girl thought sick husband should choose desired menu that night and he wanted Thai Green Curry. So in part we ended up in Veena mainly because of the Thai Seafood part of the extraordinarily mediocre signboard. It was right next to a Chinese restaurant that had little beer flyers hung all over from the canopy to the floor. I hesitated but then noticed Veena's cooks and waiters kindly faces and muslimah dressing and were assured the place were halal.

The signboard seen from the road. The river runs on the other side.

We sat down at the table near the river except the river was pitch black and the air was full of buzzing mosquitoes so we moved to the center. We noticed quite a number of tables were reserved. I thought nothing of it until the food arrived.

Let me just say the place must be--I have no doubt---a local favourite. By 9 pm the place was bustling crazy and ALL the tables were full, including the mosquitoe-invested ones by the river. And the seafood---masha'Allah. OUT OF THIS WORLD. Here's what we had ordered:

1. Ikan siakap stim: with perfection approaching infinity, I have never experienced such a dish. It is now, in my book, the ideal siakap stim in Malaysia. It was served on a container of hot-coals. All my boys were slurping on the sauce and tambahing nasi 2-3 times at a rate of 3 suaps per second. My rating: A+++!

Ikan Siakap Stim. Perfection approaching infinity...

2. Tom Yam seafood. Awesome. This was my step-daughters favourite, she didn't look at anything else. It had all the usual: shrimp, squid, chicken etc etc. I would say the tom-yam here though is comparable to the Tom Yam we have in Bangi. Thank goodness, at least I don't have to travel all the way to Langkawi for Tom Yam. A+!

Tom Yam Seafood. One of the best..
3. Siakap 3-rasa. I would say siapkap kicap cili was more appropriate a name. Not that it tasted normal. It was superb. I just think that the 3-rasa theme we have in Selangor/KL has a very different meaning to it and the Langkawians didn't catch on. Nevertheless A+!

Siakap 3-rasa. Wonderfully flavourful.
4. Sotong goreng tepung: A+. Delicious. And the Thai cili sauce that came with it was original and good too.

Few notes on Veena though because I know you're just about to jump on the next plane to Langkawi. They take a while to prepare your food and we realised along the way why so many tables were reserved. The locals: they know it so they order in advance. Was the long wait worth it? A big resounding YES. One mouthful of the siakap stim and Veena just got a huge I-dont-care-how-long-it-took-you-to-cook-my-food-but-you're-forgiven ticket. Few places do that to me. Its like forgiving your husband for forgetting your birthday because he bought you a BMW with his bonus pay. Wouldn't that be wonderful.

Our bill.

I am putting Veena up there for the best MUST STOP Thai Seafood restaurant in Langkawi. We went to 5-6 restaurants while we were there, and although they were all good and satisfactory, Veena shines through like a diamond among cubic zirconias. We went home happy and full, and to my pleasant surprise the bill only came to RM100+ which also includes telur dadar, sambal belacan, two big bowls of jasmine rice, kangkung cili and drinks--although I am clueless to what they charged us on the bill and do hope they've covered everything. After all that food, hubs fever broke alhamdulillah and he was right as rain for another rendezvous of the island the next day. Alhamdulillah and thank you Veena. What a wonderful Thai Seafood experience you left us with. Please don't ever change. I love you just the way you are.

Holiday Destination: Hot Springs Sungai Klah

[Click on pictures to enlarge. Thanks Abang for the pictures].

All clean and ready to go home. Thank you Hotsprings for a wonderful day!

Oh my Allah. I have wanted to review this place for so long, but always got deterred. I would type it all in, stare at the screen and delete what I wrote. Or I'd be happy with it but won't hit the publish button. My Hubs says just leave it if you're not feeling it. But it's such a nice place not to review.  So today I thought I'll put it in anyway, because the school holidays are near, and you must be pulling your hair out wondering where to take the kids this time. Well this is a nice place. And it's cheap. And it's near.

The park was nice, clean and calming.

We were in Sungai Klah for a wedding last month (my entire family), and I knew about the hotsprings, so I suggested we go. My bestie had her family day there and although she never elaborated on the experience afterwards, I gathered she had a pretty nice time. So we had packed extra clothes in advance, and were looking forward to a relaxing day with our toes in hot water doing nothing.

When we got there, it was around 3 pm already. There was very little people about although it was a nice and sunny Saturday afternoon. We parked the car in a dedicated parking lot and walked up towards the ticket booth. Tickets cost RM12 per adult, and you board a friendly little tram to enter the park.

I was expecting little ponds of hot water in the middle of a wild forest with chalets scattered here and there, lots of mosquitoes whuzzing by your ears and rubbish everywhere. But I was wrong on all counts. The place was clean, interesting and nicely laid out. No mosquitoes, no rubbish, and clear of mat rempits. In fact, it surprised me that there was such a small crowed of people for such a nice place on a weekend.

As soon as we arrived, we headed straight for the biggest pool. On the way, we passed by an egg-boiling area where people were sticking their egg boiling apparatus into the hot water and waiting excitedly for their eggs to cook. Since we had just came from a kenduri that had tempoyak and rendang tok, we K.I.Ved and continued on.

The main water pool was a good size, with two water slides set between some artificial rocks. I quickly changed into my swimming clothes--my old pajama pants sorry--and joined the crowd. Ohhh~~ it was such great fun~ If you've been to Sunway Lagoon, you'd know the big crowd just spoils about everything. That day, it was just perfect. There was an average of 2 people per 20 squarefeet which was just fine with me. I had my space. I splashed and sploshed and threw water at hubs like a cheesy Sudirman-Anita-Sarawak music video. He ran around in slo-mo like a Baywatch lifeguard.

The main swimming pool. This is just one half of it. It was big.
There was another hotter public pool on the other side of the park.

Hot water fountain, with water at 100 degrees celcius.

After an hour of swimming, playing on the slides and acting like we're 18, we propelled ourselves to the present and decided it was time to explore the rest of the park. So me and hubs left the rest of the family (who can't get enough of the pool) and went back to the egg place. For the next half hour we soaked our feet in the hot water pond, took some pictures and watched people boiling and eating eggs. Then hubs said we should check out the Jacuzzi's.

sheemzhubs

The Jacuzzi's were in a dedicated area further into the park. The open-air jacuzzi's cost RM75 per hour and roofed-air-conditioned ones cost RM100 per hour. We were quite surprised we could get a jacuzzi immediately. The lady at the counter seemed bored and eager to get rid of us (her FB status was getting hits on "two more customers. help, need new job"). She ushered us into the little compound and left us without so much as a goodbye. We locked the door from the inside and looked around.

The jacuzzi place. Although it was a Saturday there wasnt that much people
around and we got a room immediately.

The open-air jacuzzi had a high wall running around it, and was very private. There was a roofed platform with benches to put our stuff on, a little room with a clean white toilet bowl, a stone water basin that looked like it came from the Hang Tuah era, with a slab of stone next to it for a stool, and a shower. The Jacuzzi pool was set in the middle, surrounded by what looked like some really crazy wild plants. The water was really really really hot and it took us approx 10 minutes to work up the courage and several buckets of cold water, before we finally jumped in. I think I just killed all the bacteria in my system that day with the heat and cold I subjected myself to. And upped my immune system by 100%. When we left an hour later, we were calm, collected and squeaky clean.

The private jacuzzis are very private
and romantic.
Roofed platform where we changed
and put our stuff
Stone water basin, stone slab and
shower. I loved it.

The jacuzzi with natural hot water

We went to get an ice-cream sandwich after that and checked out another large swimming pool (but we didn't jump it, we were already very tired), a 100 degree fountain, a little river and a bridge. We waited at a nice little gazebo for the others to finish swimming and clean up to drive home to KL.

All in all, it was a great Saturday at a very very pleasant park. The place is awesome for the whole family and just great for some quiet time away with your significant other. However, according to my BFF, the place is very hard (keras). In Malay terminology that means banyak hantu. Her husband was involved in the development and he vows never to take her and the kids there ever. But to be perfectly honest I was totally unaware of any paranormal activity, although hubs said he felt like we were constantly being watched. I have yet to scan our pictures carefully of any weird 3rd presence. If I do find something extraordinary, I will make an announcement on the Asian Food Channel.

Kyros kebab :: go for lamb kebab!

The epitome's of kebab. Kyros Lamb Kebab. Not so good looking on the outside,
but very good-tasting on the inside. Please, do grab one now.

There's a little Kyros Kebab restaurant in Warta Bangi thats been there since time memorial but I've never even blinked at them --how haughty taughty of me (slap self). I guess the idea of kebab did not appeal, although I had kebabs nearly every other weekend back when I was studying in the UK. Tapi bak kata orang-orang bijak pandai kalau dah ada jodoh tu takkan ke mana. Tak pandang pun lama-lama boleh jatuh cinta (google translate on left). Nowadays I am an avid Kyros kebab fan. The lamb kebab.

The first time I had Kyros is quite a story. My husband probably doesn't even know he contributed to the meeting, even though he was the one who set us up. It was love at first bite~

Flashback:

We were on the way to Genting, and the car died on the way up the mountain, as normal love stories go. A kind Samaritan stopped to help us and by the time we reach the top, it was getting dark. We  had driven round looking for a carshop. My husband parked the car near a row of shops and left us to get some supplies while we waited for him in the car.

Something emerged from the forest and stumbled past our car. Relax, it was just a dog. With three kids in the car though, the excitement and commotion was like watching an elephant pass by in a drive-through safari. The dog was really skinny, and looked starved and half-dead. We took pity on it and searched around in the car for food. We found the kyros kebab hubs had bought before we left Bangi, and flung it at the dog. Before I did though, we all took a small bite each of the kebab.

Pause remote:

The kebab was superb.

Continue story:

So superb the kids began fighting over it and I nearly changed my mind about giving it to the dog. But in a matter of seconds it was flying out the window anyway, and the dog gobbled it up and wobbled off. Hubs returned safe sound and unscratched and I apologized for his lost kebab and promised to get him another. He nearly strangled me in the car and threw me off the cliff--actually no, that was an ending to another movie. Just to fast forward a bit, while hubs was immersed in watching a really boring movie recently, I went out to Warta and bought him the replacement kebab. Promise fulfilled--although it was 9 months later. I hope you realized you were eating a kebab that day Abang.

Ida with black pepper spaghetti. A!
Miza with rootbeer float. A!

Present Day:

Last week me and [Assoc Prof] Miza went to Streetmall for a late lunch after another long meeting discussing the future of the younger generation (the ones who are currently stuck in FOE) and how we can get them to do the AES evaluation online without tying them to their chairs. There is a Kyros Kebab restaurant at the streetmall and remembering the one lingering bite so long ago at Genting, I suggested we get the lamb kebab to Miza.

She loved it, as did I (flashback: Genting episode). And Miza liked it so much that she stopped to get one for her husband too the next day, who said it tasted better than a Subway sandwich. I agree. Subway seems to taste the same nowadays regardless of the different fillings; it's like drinking different brands of mineral water. But if Subway was Air Mineral Petronas, Kyros Lamb kebab would be Evian.

Black pepper spaghetti. A!
Current promotion at Kyros Kebab @ Street Mall Cyberjaya. Make it a lamb kebab night!

Anyway, the pictures you see here was visit number 3 this month with Ida tagging along. Ida said the black pepper spaghetti is good too. Me and Miza remained faithful to our lamb kebab, we were women on a lamb kebab mission that day. It was as awesome as expected and as filling as a plateful of rice with 3 sides and an extra dash of tempoyak/sambal belacan/budu (insert favourite condiment here). The shredded lamb gives you an extra boost of energy to patiently finish off that thesis which reads suspiciously like its been copied off Wikipedia. And the bread was warm and crunchy enough to make you feel all optimistic for another semester of marking scrawling assignments, quizzes, lab reports and exam papers. Thank you Kyros for the awesome lamb kebab. Alhamdulillah.
